There are many alpine touring specific skis on the market. These are designed with the specific needs of touring and the backcountry in mind. The major difference is that they are lighter than a traditional downhill ski. Alpine touring skis are also designed to accept climbing skins easily. Many of the staff at Alpsport tour in the Australian backcountry and would be happy to help you find the right ski. Be sure to look at the alpine touring bindings page to find out about the bindings we carry.
You can tour on any flat alpine ski but many people will have one ski for resort and one for the backcountry, as each style of skis is quite different. The resort skis tend to be based off twin tips and tend to give better performance on groomed runs but come with a weight penalty as a result. However, backcountry skis are much lighter but tend to be less sturdy and of lower performance when on hard pack and carving
If you are after a specific backcountry ski Alpsport stocks a wide variety of brands including K2 who make some great skis like the Wayback from the “backside range” of backcountry skis, or Black Diamond who have skis like the Voodoo. An addition to our range of backcountry skis are the Dynafits, we have stoked the bindings and boots for some time, so it was time to complete the range! Volkl and Goode will also have some skis on our shelf.
Alpine touring is a very specific market and if you have found the ski you are after but can not seem to find it anywhere, please give us a call and see if we have it or can get it in for you.
